Counterpoint: Why Twitter is Great
![]()
So yeah, I sent Eric the link to Loren Feldman’s rant on Twitter. The truth is, I too am a huge 1938 Media fan and have been for awhile now. How did I find out about Loren’s videos you may ask?
On Twitter, of course.
Sure, Twitter can be annoying. Lately it has been down more than up. The system is buckling under the strain of its immense popularity and what started as a tool designed around answering the most basic of questions (What are you doing?) has become the new standard for instant messaging.
However..
Twitter is still great.
It is a place I can go to be connected to the news and opinion I care about (like Loren’s).
If I am interested in following an event like a conference or product announcement its the place I go to track those conversations in real-time.
When I use a product or service and want to give direct feedback to the developer of that product or service, Twitter opens those channels of communication.
Twitter tells me the weather outside, the price of gas, the best places to eat in Flagstaff and whether the home team is up in the bottom of the ninth inning. It even tells me who won Dancing with the Stars when I am away from home! Oh, and if knowing everything about this planet isn’t enough, it tells me about whats going down on Mars as well!
You may be saying to yourself: “Self? I can do all of those things by just turning on my television?”
Sure, you can — and for the vast majority of people thats all they need. Twitter, and to a greater extent social media, isn’t for everyone.
But it is for me!
Twitter fits in with my lifestyle. My twitter client sits on my desktop, on the side of my screen out of the way, feeding me with information as it happens. When I am away from the computer, it is smart enough to give me the updates I need on my mobile phone so I don’t miss anything important.
So yeah, I love Twitter. And in some ways without it I wouldn’t be writing this post on the Mighty Interactive blog. You see, Twitter helped me find this job in the first place!

For the record, I don’t hate Twitter. I just think it still has a very niche level of interest, and will probably be gone before too long.
At the same time, it is neat to be able to just dash off a quick thought and be done with it. In fact, I’m really digging BriteKite these days for much the same reason - though it doesn’t seem to fall apart as often.

Eric - that’s just because no one’s using BriteKite yet. Just wait.
